SgtMaj Allen E. Smith was born in Greenwood South Carolina. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on August 08, 2000 and attended 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, Lima Company at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, SC.
Sergeant Major Smith completed Marine Combat Training in December of 2000 and Military Police school in March of 2001.
Sergeant Major Smith was assigned to the Provost Marshals Office, Headquarters and Service Battalion, Parris Island, SC in April of 2001. Sergeant Major Smith attended the Domestic Violence Intervention course in 2003. In 2004 he won the PMO board to attend K-9 handler’s course. Sergeant Major Smith served as the barracks NCO at the school house and completed K-9 handler’s course in April of 2004 obtaining the MOS of 5812.
Due to the consolidation of the Provost Marshals Office, Sergeant Major Smith received PCA orders to Provost Marshals Office, Headquarters Squadron, MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina in October 2004. In May of 2005 Sergeant Major Smith was deployed to Iraq for OIF 4 and held the billets of K-9 handler, Trainer, and Supervisor for western Al Anbar Province over 16 dog teams. Upon return from deployment, Sergeant Major Smith attended Non-Lethal Weapons Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and continued working at MCAS Beaufort until July of 2006.
Sergeant Major Smith was then assigned to Drill Instructors School, Parris Island, SC, graduating from class 4-06 in September of 2006, and upon completion, was sent to the Green Belt Instructors Course at Parris Island. Upon graduation from the course he was assigned to Kilo Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion. While assigned to Kilo Company he won the Drill Instructor Of The Quarter Board. He also won Senior Drill Instructor Of The Quarter Board. Sergeant Major Smith graduated six platoons then went on quota to Support BN, Instructional Training Company, Leatherneck Square. He served as a Martial Arts Instructor and team leader at leatherneck square earning his 1st degree Black belt. Sergeant Major Smith also was the Funeral detail SNCOIC for the Recruit Training Regiment from August 25th 2008 until April 22nd 2009.
On May 1st 2009, Sergeant Major Smith was assigned to Security Battalion, Quantico, Virginia. Upon checking in he was immediately assigned to Officer Candidate School, India Company, Quantico, Virginia. While serving in India Company, Sergeant Major Smith graduated two platoons of Platoon Leaders Course (Juniors) for the summer of 2009. He was awarded as the outstanding drill instructor of India Company by Colonel Mancini, Commanding Officer of OCS. On August 13th 2009 he was reassigned to Security Battalion, Quantico, Virginia where he served as a Platoon Commander for 3rd platoon. Upon return to Security Battalion, Sergeant Major Smith served as a Platoon Sergeant for 3rd platoon. On May 7th 2010 he was reassigned to Officer Candidate School, Alpha Company, Quantico, Virginia. While serving in Alpha Company, Sergeant Major Smith completed one platoon of Platoon Leaders Course (Combined) for the summer of 2010. On August 14th 2010 he was reassigned to Security Battalion, Quantico, Virginia. On October 24th 2010 he graduated from Military Working Dog Supervisors Course. Upon graduation he returned back to Security Battalion, Quantico Virginia. In April of 2011 Sergeant Major Smith was meritoriously promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and worked as the Kennel Master until receiving orders to Officer Candidate School for the summer of 2011. On May 12th 2011 he was reassigned to Officer Candidate School, Headquarters and Service Company, Academics, Instruction Section, Quantico, Virginia. While serving in Academics Section, Sergeant Major Smith served as an academic instructor teaching numerous candidates in various Marine Corps topics for the summer of 2011. On August 21st 2011 he was reassigned to Security Battalion, Quantico, Virginia where he served as the Kennel Master over the Military Police K-9 Section.
On January 9th 2012, Sergeant Major Smith was assigned to II Marine Headquarters Group, 2D Law Enforcement Battalion, Military Police Support Group, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Upon checking in he was immediately assigned as the Company First Sergeant for Charlie Company. On March 23rd 2012 he was assigned to 2D Marine Logistics Group, Combat Logistics Battalion 26, Military Police Detachment, where he served as the Detachment Commander, Antiterrorism Force Protection Officer, Physical Security Officer, Security Officer, and Counter Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Device Officer until they were assigned to the 26th MEU on September 7th 2012.
During October 2012, Sergeant Major Smith served as the senior enlisted advisor for the relief detachment from the Combat Logistics Battalion 26, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit in support of the Hurricane Sandy cleanup efforts in New York. On March 14th 2013 he deployed with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit and was sent to EXERCISE AGILE SPIRIT 2013 in the Republic of Georgia. He also trained at EAGLE RESOLVE in Qatar and EXERCISE EAGER LION 2013 in the Kingdom of Jordan. Upon completion he returned to the USS San Antonio for the duration of the deployment. Upon completion of the deployment he was sent back to 2D Law Enforcement Battalion. In February of 2015, Sergeant Major Smith was frocked to First Sergeant and given orders to 2D Battalion 10TH Marine Regiment, Battery E, where he deployed with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit again and served in OPERATION INHERENT RESOLVE as the Battery First Sergeant.
In May of 2017, Sergeant Major Smith was assigned to Marine Corps Detachment Fort Leonard Wood Missouri where he served as the Company First Sergeant for Engineer Equipment Instruction Company and Military Police Instruction Company.
In November of 2019, Sergeant Major Smith was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major and subsequently received orders to Marine Aircraft Group 16, VMM-163, where he served as the Squadron Sergeant Major.
In December of 2021, Sergeant Major Smith received orders to 9th Communication Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California where he served as the Battalion Sergeant Major before retiring after over 23 years of service.
In July of 2024, Sergeant Major Smith was hired as a Naval Science Instructor for the NJROTC program at Union Pines High School where he serves currently.
Sergeant Major Smith’s Personal Awards include the Meritorious Service Medal 3rd Award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal 3rd award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal 2nd award, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal 7th award, Certificate of Commendation 3rd award, and Letter of Appreciation 5th award. He is married to his lovely wife Brantley and they have a daughter named Ava.
